Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The practice of obstetrics and gynaecology in Australia and New Zealand is very similar to that in any other westernised country such as the UK or Ireland. The surgical techniques and equipment used are identical to what would be found in hospitals in these other countries.
Obstetrics practice is an area of some development with the implementation of "shared models" of care, where practitioners work co-operatively with specialist midwives to provide antenatal and postnatal care, and intrapartum care in the acute hospital setting may involve midwifes delivering uncomplicated normal vaginal deliveries without doctor involvement. For all abnormal presentations, twin pregnancies, premature or instrumental deliveries, the obstetrics consultant or their resident and registrar become involved.
