Positions at specialist (consultant) level are often available in the metropolitan and large regional towns. A visiting consultative service is some times offered to rural areas.

The practice of psychiatry in Australia is very similar to that in any other westernised country such as the UK or Ireland. Australia is well known for having modern and progressive protocols and guidelines.

International psychiatry qualifications accepted as equivalent in Australia for practicing as a consultant:

UK/ EIRE MRCPsych / FRCPsych plus Certificate of Accreditation in Psychiatry from the Joint Committee of Higher Medical Training in the United Kingdom or UK Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST)
USA Certificate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology
Canada Fellowship in Psychiatry or Certificate in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada
Australia/ NZ FRANZCP (Fellowship or Membership of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists)

Other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
